So what is the fuss about the Magid klezmer book?
Here is a long form video of me explaining what the fuss is about that I’m posting on every corner of Metaverse about this new Magid klezmer book. TL/DR: in all of the pre-Holocaust, Europe: - only Magid, Beregovskiy, and Kiselgof and friends went to make field sound recording of Jews making music; - Only Magid and Kiselgof recorded in Belarus, thus documenting the Litvak tradition; - Only Mag...

On December 10, 2024, I have released the first volume of what I envision as series of critical sheet music (transcriptions) publications from Sofia Magid's Jewish ethnographic collection. I researched the collection in St. Petersburg's Pushkin House in 2002 and 2004, performed the music with my bands, brought it to the Defiance movie, Traveling the Yiddishland cine-concert, taught it across th...

One day an Israeli TV crew and the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue's Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch walked into our rehearsal with Cantor Dan Singer. So we did a bit of Lecha Dodi that we do most of the Kabbalat Shabbat (Friday night) services. Note the beatufiul 97-key Bösendorfer 290 "Imperial" - I love that piano.

This August marked the 80th anniversary of the liquidation of the Lodz ghetto, one of the largest in Poland and on the German-occupied territories in general. Out of 230,000 Lodz Jews, 877 survived the Holocaust in Lodz, about 10,000 survived in other places. As I have been working on the music project. A Bukovinan Jewish (Yiddish) song performed at the Galitsianers evening at The Workers Circle’s Trip to Yiddishland program. This one comes from the ethnomusicologist Ruth Rubin’s collection, and it was documented from herself: she had learned the song from her mother who came from Hotin, on Dniester river, now on the Ukrainian-Romanian border. Aaron Alexander luckily joined me on the poyk (dru...

Miyazawa? I bought one recently also, love it!
Indeed! Really wonderful instrument.
Beautiful. Has anybody sung your translation?
Thank you! No, I don’t think so.
Very cool! Unfortunately I live in a wack time zone
As an option, you will have infinite access to all the recordings that will be made available a few days after each class.
Zisl the best!
Hmmm .... And don't you have an electronic version to be sent by email ? Or via ebay or another platform ??
No electronic form - I am sorry. If you can buy via eBay, you should be as well able to buy via Bandcamp: both platforms accept PayPal and credit cards.
👌👍👋
Hello How to get your music sheet edition from Europe ?
You can order it at zisl.bandcamp.com/merch The only downside is, shipping cost is just as much as the book itself.
Happy New Year dear Zisl !!
Thank you! Happy New Year to you too! 🙏
Shkoyach!
Such a great show!!! Congratulations on the publication - just received your book in the mail!!
Thank you so much! Wow- so fast!
Excellent.
That piano is beautiful (and you can play well, too) 😅
Hello, I would like to hear you improv on the new Dickerson Resonator Ligature with the built in resonator
So good in yiddish! This song is one one my favorite- and we played it at my mothers grave- so it is very special to me I would suggest to translate the yiddish not from the english but from the translated german text- i would love, love to hear it - in german it says "nehmt abschied brüder"
Sehr sheyn.
Beautiful song❤
It is! Thank you!🙏
❤ I am a child of Holocaust survivors, frm Frankfurt/ Lvov family and I just want to thank you for providing these videos. I am 69 and most of our elders have passed z'l bt some still carrying on in many places. This helps my heart so very much, G-d bless you and everyone. 💙💙💙💙💙🌊🎐☯️☮🌹✌🏻✌🏿🥰💙💜💚🙏🏾🙏🏼
So is this what plays on the Jewish space lasers? Just kidding this is really awesome.
Thanks :-) 🌠
Fantabulous!
Thank you! 🙏
🎉🎉💃
come to brazil!
With pleasure!
I love the sound of the clarinet keep up the good work❤️👍
This reminds me of the Yiddish film song from New York “Motl der Opreyter.” When was this written?
Some time in the 20th century. It wasn't exactly "written", it was composed, part of oral tradition.
So glad to hear this music Zisl. My grandfather was from a small village near shtetl Kalinkovitch. Is there any more footage or information of Kalinkovichi?
Thank you! Well, the music is by the US band Kapelye from the 80’s (Undzer Toyrele) - I had to use some music track to encourage people to dance. The point here really is the choreography. Yes, there are several interviews (all in Russian) that Nina Stepanskaya Z”L and I conducted there. In general, there were very few individuals over the course of 6-7 years of our fieldwork who were born in villages: most were born in towns- big and small. BTW, in Lida, they clearly meant “Jewish quarter” when they said “shtetl”, as in, part of a larger township / town.
@@ZiSlepovitch Thank you for your kind reply Zisl. I will look for those videos. The other side of the Family was from a neighboring shtetl Azaritch (Azarychy/Ozarichi) Do you have any videos or interviews with an Azaritcher?
@@dino1635 the videos aren’t public, but multiple interviewees shared their memory of the terrible ghetto in Ozarichi where most of the local Jews got killed by the nazis.
@@ZiSlepovitch I understand. I have heard these tragic stories. May the memory of the loves ones never be forgotten. I’m hoping to find interviews about life there in Azaritch & Kalinkovitch, before the wars. I will keep researching.
Excellent! And so good to use this spicy old tune.
Som muito bonito. Música com muito sentimento. Parabéns.
Thank you! 🙏
Beautiful, Zisl! Thank you so much for posting 🙏🙏
